Javier Abad, bassoonist

I started playing Bassoon at the Banda Municipal de Música in Tudela (Navarra, Spain) ate the age of fourteen and I did my degree in Bassoon eight years later at the Conservatorio Pablo Sarasate in Pamplona with Professor José Javier Sánchez Olaso.

I got a scholarship from the Government of Navarra that allowed me to study with the great Sergio Azzolini in Stuttgart (Germany) and Basel (Switzerland) where I had also the opportunity to introduce me in the Baroque Bassoon technique.

After that I won the Square Co-Principal Bassoon, by competition, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of Galicien, where I was working for four seasons.
With a scholarship from Berklee, Generalitat de Catalunya, Boston Stock Exchange and the IAE, I could study Dual Bachelor Degree in Film Scoring and Composition, and also Improvisation, Jazz and Music Technology and Sound Design at Berklee College of Music (Boston, Massachusetts) . In two years in Boston I had the opportunity to work improvisation-jazz-bassoon with prestigious saxophonists Joe Lovano, Frank Tiberi and Dino Govoni.

After that I lived for two years in Los Angeles (California) composing, recording and producing soundtracks for movies and video, and working with film composers, including most notably the great Javier Navarrete.

I produce audiovisual works for live performances as The Magic of Cinema where improvisation merges with film and theater, being the bassoon always present. I am founder of Freelandia, contemporary experimental music group based on the concept of 'site specific' where improvisations and soundscapes are inspired by the place at the time, interacting with space and people.

I also completed studies at the U.O.C. (Universitat Oberta de Catalunya) in Computer Programming, Graphic Design and Video. I have produced websites professionally for FLUX. I have directed two short films: "The Red Frog", "Imagine Imagine" the teaser "September Costa Rica" and various video and animation works both as editor and filmmaker. Also "Orange and Moons" by Blue Velvet and "Summercat". These are some of my credits as film composer.

I have created and developed the website elfagot.com (ebassoon.com), where I intend both to be a place for sharing concerns about bassoon,music, and artis.

In a educational level I have been professor of bassoon at the Conservatoire de Barañain, School for Advanced Musical Studies in Galicia, Lugo Conservatory, and recently Classroom So I founded Bassoon School in Barcelona.

I have been member of the National Youth Orchestra of Spain, Latin American Youth Orchestra and Euskalherria Youth Orchestra. I have also been invited to perform with orchestras such as Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, ​​Galicia Symphony Orchestra, Barcelona Symphony and Catalonia National City Orchestra , Granada, Bilbao Symphony, Symphonic Orchestra of Navarra, Euskadi Symphony, Taima Granada (contemporary music ), among others.

Nowadays I am Principal Bassoon at Orquesta Camerata XXI in Tarragona (Spain) y and I collaborate with Contemporary Ensemble Barcelona216 and Andorra Chamber Orchestra.

I love playing Zarzuela (Spanish Lyric Genre) and I have very high regard about it. I think Zarzuela is an absolutely original and unique, and I try to play whenever I can in the Barcelona's seasons.

I won the International Competition for soloists in Zumaia (Basque Land) and International Music Tournament in Zaragoza.

I do workshops, seminars and performances on improvisation for bassoon and instrumentalists for both students and professionals. Watch videos of the Bassoon Week 2010.
