All bassoonists who have ever made reeds agree on a basic difference between “good” cane and “bad” cane. When two reeds are identical in design, manufacture and condition, the one that responds well is made of “good” cane, while the mediocre or worse reed is made of “bad” cane.

hen, of course, you have to know where to scrape or adjust etc. But the most important thing is that you have a methodical approach so that you have an overview while paying attention to what you are doing, thereby learning from your mistakes and developing your knowledge and your skills in order to have the reeds the way you want them.
